How not to get ripped off purchasing home improvements:

CHOOSING A CONTRACTOR:

Check with the Contractor’s State License Board’s website (www.cslb.ca.gov) to see that the contractor is licensed and insured with liability insurance and Worker’s compensation insurance. Also check with the Better Business Bureau. Find a contractor who has been in business for over ten years, as you will find that most home improvement contractors have been in business for less than five years.

When shopping, you will want to get answers to the following questions so that you can make a fair comparison later. There are approximately 40 different brands of windows and doors. Find a company that is Just Right: big enough to do the job and small enough to care.

Windows and doors are sold like cars. For example, series 100 as low grade, series 400 as medium grade, and series 600 as high grade, made by the same manufacturer.

1. What type of spacers are being used? The wrong spacer will allow condensation to develop between the glass.

2. Have the company explain the different types of glass for energy savings.

3. Also ask about the 4 different types of frames.

4. How thick is the glass? The space between the glass? The big differences are sound reduction and energy savings

INSTALLATION:

Ask them how they are going to install the windows and doors, whether new construction or replacement..
